President & CEO

The United Way of New York State (UWNYS), the 501(c)3 statewide advocacy and professional association representing 37 United Ways across the State, is seeking an energetic and innovative leader to serve as President & CEO.  The successful candidate will have proven leadership and management experience, an excellent track record in government & philanthropic fundraising, strong communication & networking skills and a reputation of high integrity that will enable him or her to support the needs of the local United Ways and fully engage the membership toward common goals and priorities.  Experience within a United Way organization or other non-profit organization, or in the business/public sector with significant volunteer leadership experience will also be important considerations in the evaluation and selection process for this position.  

The successful candidate will also be expected to demonstrate a passion for the mission of the United Way, and be able to engage its membership and other stakeholders to advance that mission through personal contacts & communication as well as strategic and tactical use of social media and technology, and by expanding and strengthening financial support from governmental and other sources, influencing public policy that would impact United Ways’ mission and programs, and developing and managing statewide initiatives that support the needs of local United Ways and the constituencies they serve in their local communities.

The President & CEO of United Way of NYS serves as the primary voice on behalf of United Ways in NYS with State policymakers in Albany.  As such, the position requires solid knowledge of the State legislative process and proven ability to successfully navigate the political, economic and social environments that impact public policy decision making.  

Engaging and supporting the needs of the local United Ways also requires an ability and willingness to travel extensively around the State to understand the challenges and opportunities of the local United Ways in order to shape and inform statewide priorities and initiatives that will leverage individual community resources.

The United Way of NYS office is located in Latham, NY, a suburb of the state capital in Albany.      

General Duties & Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provides leadership for the development and execution of a robust public policy agenda that helps to strengthen & support the mission of UWNYS and local United Ways, and the public policy goals of other key partners including state & local governments, business, labor and human service agencies
  • Provides leadership and support to local United Ways as needed with professional guidance in managing change, promoting diversity and inclusion and leveraging community resources
  • Serves as a collaborative and guiding force in unifying a United Way system in New York State that leverages the strengths of each local United Way and connects member organizations at the regional and state levels for the greater benefit of all New Yorkers.
  • Serves as the designated spokesperson for United Way of NYS in communicating with elected and appointed government officials at the State level, and with press and the public at large on statewide issues and topics.
  • In collaboration with the UWNYS Board of Directors & Executive Committee, identifies and secures the resources needed to fulfill the organization’s mission and goals
  • Oversees the staff of the UWNYS organization and directs and manages staff assignments and responsibilities
  • Works with Board of Directors & Executive Committee and Board Committee chairs to develop and implement strategic and operational plans advance the mission of UWNYS
  • Carries out general management responsibilities and other needs as delegated by the Board of Directors
  • Reports to the UWNYS Board Chair & Board of Directors

Experience, Competencies and Education

  • Exemplary non-profit & financial management experience; strong association with United Way movement desirable.
  • Collaborative and creative management style, high ethical standards and appropriate professional image.
  • Experienced facilitator, able to bring people together regardless of differing needs and viewpoints to pursue the common good.
  • Strategic thinker with sound technical skills, analytical ability, good judgment, strong operational skills
  • Well-organized and self-directed, able to think independently
  • Agile, proactive and decisive in anticipating and addressing issues & opportunities
  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills, proven ability to strategically utilize social media & technology
  • A good educator & mentor who is trustworthy and willing to share information and serve as a mentor.
  • An excellent negotiator experienced in legislation, public policy, and government relations.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents.
  • Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints.
  • Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to the Board and outside stakeholders.  
  • Masters degree (MA) or equivalent; or ten to fifteen years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
